The total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026
Imagine living through a total solar eclipse in a village of fewer than 150 inhabitants. While thousands of people search for somewhere to look up at the sky, here you have the calm of the Sierra de Gúdar-Javalambre, the silence of the mountains and an open horizon waiting for you. The sky will be the same for everyone. The way you live it will not.
What will happen
A night that arrives by day
On 12 August 2026, the Iberian Peninsula will witness its first total solar eclipse visible in the north since 1905: more than a century without anything like it. The path of totality — the narrow band from which the sun is hidden completely — crosses the province of Teruel, and Fuentes de Rubielos lies within it.
Totality will begin at around 20:31, reach its peak at about 20:32 and last roughly a minute and a half (1 min 34 s). It is not long: that is why it pays to be in position already, unhurried, with the horizon in clear view.
During those seconds the sky darkens as if night had fallen all at once, the brightest stars and planets appear, and the temperature drops several degrees in an instant. The light becomes something else. It is one of those few things you truly have to live in person.
- Totality 20:31 h
- Duration 1 min 34 s
- Height of the sun around 5° above the western horizon
Why here
Within the path of totality, with a guaranteed line of sight
It is not enough to be in the path of totality: you have to be able to see the sun. Here you have both — and the second we have checked on the ground.
The great challenge of this eclipse is that the sun will be very low at the moment of totality: around 5° above the horizon, towards the west-northwest (azimuth 285°). At that height, in a city any building, hill or tree blocks it. Visibility is, truly, the problem of 12 August.
That is why we don’t promise it to you on a map: we checked it on the ground. In late April 2026 we ran the test with the sun in its real position. By symmetry with the June solstice, around 28–30 April the sun sets almost exactly where — and how — it will go down during the eclipse. We saw with our own eyes where the light fell.
From the balcony of the first-floor apartment you can see the eclipse up to the moment of totality and, afterwards, part of the emerging phase, as the sun slowly reappears.
And to see it in full, with certainty: the Peirón de San Jorge, a raised spot facing west, a 15-minute walk from the house. From there you follow the whole process, from beginning to end, without a single obstacle in front of you.
Even stepping out of the house onto the road, about 50 metres away, the line of sight is already clear. You don’t have to go far to have a clean horizon.
- From the balcony First floor · up to totality and part of the emergence
- From the Peirón de San Jorge 15 min walk · full view guaranteed
- Checked on the ground a real rehearsal in late April
Gúdar-Javalambre has been a Starlight Reserve and Destination since 2016: one of the darkest, clearest skies in Europe. The Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre stands in the very range you can see from the house, and the ESA will broadcast the eclipse from precisely there. It is no coincidence that this is one of the chosen places to look up at the sky.
This area is one of the most sought-after astronomy destinations for the eclipse, and many people have been booking these dates for years. Accommodation within the path of totality is limited by pure geography: there is only room for so many.
